Managing Costs Of Kids Sports

By Jim Henderson Sportswriter

At a time when so many children are involved in organized sports, and often more than one, how can you make sure you're not breaking the bank to fund these extra-curricular activities. Not to mention if you have more than one child in numerous sports.

Back in the day, kids often honed their athletic skills at the neighborhood park.

Organized sports teams, camps and clinics have replaced parks and pickup games

Cub Scout Day Camp And Resident Camp

Article Image Alt Text

Cub Scout Pack 59 had a great turnout at the District Day Camp at Lamar Dixon in June, and Council Resident Camp at Camp Avondale in July. Between both camps, 16 of our 26 Scouts attended and spent a fun week working on achievements for their next rank!

Great job to our Scouts, and a very special “Thank You!” to the parents and leaders who volunteered their time at the camps as well! You are the reason we have such a great Scouting program in St. James Parish!

How Officials Operate A Football Game

By Jim Henderson Sportswriter

High school football officiating is an expensive, but necessary proposition. Every certified official costs $90 per game. A registered official's rate is $65. Then add another $15 to the fee of a referee, who serves as the chief (the white cap).

That's not counting a clock operator and a play clock operator. So it's quite common that an athletic director will ask for a five-man, on-field crew rather than the full complement of seven officials.

But while cutting out two officials off the crew may save a few dollars means less coverage of the field.

Every official wearing vertical stripes has an area of responsibility. And not everyone has his eyes on the football. Once the play begins, the officials follow a four-part sequence: snap, tackle, key and zone. But before the play gets under way the officials have a presnap routine.

Area Teams Begin Football, Volleyball Practice

By Jim Henderson Sportswriter

So now the grass is cut, weights have been lifted, and now it's time to get back to work. The 2017 prep football season is right around the corner as teams began hitting the practice fields starting this week. Volleyball team practice also got underway along with Cross Country and Swimming.

As temperatures around the state continue to rise, reaching the triple digits in some areas with the heat index, it's important to remind parents, coaches and student athletes of the dangers of heat related illnesses.

There are several types of heat illness, but athletes are specifically at risk of heat stroke, which is caused by intense exercise in the heat. Remember that all athletes sweat at different and lose amounts of salt in the sweat. This can make someone more susceptible to a heat illness different than other athletes.
