Corey Merrill Drafted By Los Angeles Dodgers

Last Wednesday, Lutcher native and Tulane Green Wave right hand pitcher Corey Merrill was selected in the 37th Round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. According to Tulane’s website, Merrill was picked 1,120th overall by the Dodgers.

Lady Pride Capture Wins In Tourney Play

The Lutcher High-based Lady Pride A 18-under traveling Softball team continued play in tourney action over the weekend and in the River Parish Metro League. In tournament play, the Lady Pride A team captured a pair of wins over the Warriors. In the first game, the Lady Pride A came away with a 9-2 victory. Both teams were tied at 1-1 at the end of the first inning. The Lady Pride A scored their lone run on a throwing error.

The Lady Pride A moved ahead for good in the second when Heather Tregre stroked a two-run RBI single to center field.

LSU senior pitcher and former Lutcher High standout Jared Poché’s career at LSU has been truly spectacular and a lot of fun to watch unfold; and what better way to wrap it up than taking a trip to Omaha, Nebraska for a shot at bringing the National Championship trophy back to Baton Rouge and being drafted for a second time.

Youth Basketball Clinic

The Sports Medicine Center of Thibodaux Regional is hosting a one day youth basketball clinic Monday, June 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The clinic will be held in the Gymnasium at Thibodaux Regional’s Wellness Center. Participants will learn fundamental skills of the game from Nicholls State University men’s basketball and local high school basketball coaches.

Boys and girls, ages 7-12 are invited to attend. Cost of the clinic is $20 and includes lunch, snacks, and a clinic tshirt. Space is limited to the first 100 participants.

Supreme Chevy Splits Pair Of Games In Legion Play

The Lutcher High School-based Supreme Chevy American Legion baseball entry split a pair of games last week, beating Destrehan and losing to St. Charles Catholic.

Against Destrehan, Supreme Chevy came away with a 6-4 victory.

Parker, Ursin To Play In MLB Breakthrough Series

St. James and Lutcher High School softball pitchers Kiri Parker and Brenn Ursin were selected to participate in the second annual Softball Breakthrough Series sponsored by Major League Baseball.

Parker and Ursin, who both will enter their junior seasons at St. James and Lutcher, are one of 60 young softball players around the country to attend the event.

Students from St. James 4-H were invited to participate at the Southeast Regional Culinary Arts Contest at the Ponchatoula Lions Club in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, on Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

Students prepared dishes to showcase one of five Louisiana commodities - sugar, egg, poultry, seafood, and beef.

Bulldogs Conclude Spring Drills With Scrimmage

The Lutcher Bulldog Football team concluded Spring drills with a intrasquad scrimmage held at LHS Football Stadium on May 24.

Head coach Dwayne Jenkins opted not to play an opponent in a scrimmage and instead used the allotted 10-day practice time to work on basic fundamentals. Jenkins indicated he needs to develop consistency in the running and passing game.

Poché’s Name Etched In LSU Record Book

With last week’s victory over Mississippi State, Jared Poché became the only pitcher in LSU history to win at least nine games in all four seasons as a Tiger.

Poché needs three more victories this season to become LSU’s all-time winningest pitcher.
