5th District Summer Recreation Camp Ends With Rain, A Program And Oh So Much Fun

Special thanks goes to everyone who assisted in making this program effective and fun for the campers. Mr. Cooper and the 5th District Recreation Program staff would like to thank the parents for trusting us with you children for 6 weeks this summer. Parents, please complete the sure so we can have you input on the service we provided. We would especially like to thank Ms. Vondra Etienne-Steib former principal of 5th Ward Elementary but current Special Education Director for St. James Parish School System and the cafeteria workers (Ms. Betty and Ms. Cathy) along with the janitors for their support. As we all know “It Takes a Community to Rear A Child.” Everyone is looking forward to the 2017 Summer Camp and providing even more activities. See you in 2017.

Jr. Choupique Rodeo Brings A Closure To Summer

Summer is coming to a close, but don’t save those fishing poles. The St. James Boat Club will be holding their “Annual Jr. Choupique Rodeo” on Aug. 7, 2016, on the Blind River Point Area and Boat Launch Areas. We are located on the US 61 Hwy at the Scenic Blind River, which is located in St. James Parish, just outside of the Town of Gramercy. All participants, 0 – 15 years old, male or female, are eligible to compete in this fishing rodeo, but must be accompanied by an adult or guardian.

Locals Help Pedal Values Capture State American Legion Baseball Title

Two local players, Conner Poche from Lutcher (Riverside, Class of 2017) and Cameron Guillot from Gramercy (Lutcher High Class of 2016 Grad) were part of the Pedal Valves Cardinal baseball team that went undefeated in the tournament to claim the State American Legion Title. Pedal Valves (PV) played in District 2, with teams Townsend Homes (SCC), Otto Candies (Hahnville), Lutcher and ES&H (Destrehan). P. V.'s record for the regular season was 24 and 6 and they won District 2 with 7 wins and 1 loss.

Jarvis Landry Comes Back To Give Back

Last Friday was a very special for roughly 100 St. James Parish youth boys as former Lutcher High School and LSU Tiger standout, now Miami Dolphin Pro-Bowl receiver Jarvis Landry held his second annual Jarvis Landry GiveBack Event at his old stomping grounds of Lutcher High School. The day was action packed for the kids as they had the opportunity to work with Landry, who last season set the NFL record for the most receptions (194) by a receiver in his first two seasons.

Six Changes In High School Football Rules

In its on going effort to minimize the risk of injury in high school football, the National Federation of State High School Associations Football Rules Committee expanded the provisions of unnecessary roughness to include contact with a defenseless player. This revision is one of six rule changes recommended by the Football Rules Committee at its meeting in Indianapolis, IN. The revised rule now reads, "No player or nonplayers shall make any contact with an opponent, including a defenseless player, which is deemed unnecessary or excessive and which incites roughness."

When the Denver Broncos captured the Super Bowl 50 title in January, Tulane fans also had something to celebrate as former Green Wave football players Lorenzo Doss and Taurean Nixon would be receiving rings alongside quarterback Peyton Manning. Fast forward a few months and another member of the Tulane Athletics family is getting their time to shine in former women’s basketball player Shelly Cayette, who had her ties to glory with the Cleveland Cavaliers organization and their first ever NBA Title.

Louisiana 4-H’ers Win National Shooting Sports Championships

One Louisiana individual and two state teams were crowned national champions at the annual 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships held June 26-July 30 in Grand Island, Nebraska. The championship had 679 participants from 36 states who competed in
