Area Prep Teams Conclude Spring Football Drills With Scrimmages

Article Image Alt Text

By Jim Henderson

Area prep football teams concluded their spring drills last week.

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) gave teams the option of holding a 10-day spring practice session with or without pads, and teams have until the end of the school year to hold the 10 practices. However, schools who opt not to hold spring practice may add more practice dates in the fall preseason camp.

Lutcher High School opted to have an intrasquad game and not scrimmage another opponent and head coach Dwain Jenkins indicated that his squad looked good in workouts and will continue to weight lift and do conditioning throughout the summer.

St. James ended spring drills with a threeteam scrimmage, and St. Charles Catholic and E.D. White had controlled scrimmage games against another opponent.

Modesty, Memories, And Moving On: Sully Martin’s LC

Article Image Alt Text

By Brad Welborn

As another college baseball season draws to a close at Louisiana College, so does the career of the man that has patrolled the center field grass of Billy Allgood Field for the past four seasons.

Sully Martin played his final game on his home field last weekend, and it turned in to an even more momentous occasion than first anticipated. On his, and seven of his teammate’s senior day, Martin cemented his name in the LC baseball record books by breaking the mark for hits in a career with a first inning single to put him over the top. While the 165 total hits was a moment of excitement for the Lutcher high grad, his time at Louisiana College has meant so much more to him than his success at the plate.
