Article Image Alt Text
By Pam Folse

The North Vacherie Volunteer Fire Department is looking for men and women to become active members, according to Department President Jacolby Octave. Of the 70 plus members on the roster, Octave said only about 40 can actually fight fires and respond to emergencies. While there are enough volunteers to make calls in the evening and on weekends, they could use much more help in the day when their members are at work or away from home.

High School Principals Vote To Keep Split In Place

By Jim Henderson

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) member principals voted last week to keep a split in place between select (private) and non-select (public) during playoff games and championships in football, basketball, baseball softball, starting this coming school (2016-17) year. State Principals considered four other proposals, but the fifth option with the “none of the above” answer passed with 56.6 percent of the vote went to keeping the split in all five sports in place. The fact that there were four other proposals on the docket did not help those who hoped to rescind the split voted on back in January.

Growing Perique Tobacco Is In Dudley LeBlanc’s Blood

I expected to see a farmer wearing a long-sleeve shirt to protect his skin from the sun. I expected him to have muddy boots. I waited for him to drive up on a tractor pulling a cart. I looked for his slightly-frayed wide-brim straw hat with a sweat-stained band. Well, my vision was all wrong. He rode up on a four-wheeler wearing jeans and a sleeveless red tee. He left his mud-laden boots in the field and was barefooted, except for the caked up earth embedded beneath his toenails.

Ridding the area of this “Eye Sore” has been on the bucket list of elected officials and the public for many years. According to Keller, he will sell the building’s metal as scrap and then plans to subdivide the property and sell lots to hopefully bring new business to the Vacherie area.

If you would have been allowed to drive down Texas Street in Lutcher on Monday, you may have thought you had somehow traveled back in time. That is because the street, nearly overnight, was transformed by a movie crew to look and feel like a street in 1946 Memphis, Tennessee.
