GGCA Holds Open House

Greater Grace Charter Academy held open house last Thursday for families and children who have already enrolled there or who are interested in enrolling. Operations Manager Dainyelle Chopin issues color-coded bus tags to students to help them to know which bus to board.

The St. James Parish Retired Teachers Association (SJRTA) will meet on Thursday, September 15th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Public Relations Building in Lutcher. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and lunch will be served.

Whew! St. James Narrowly Escapes Great Flood Of 2016

Prayers Answered!!
Last week’s article led with the statement Prepare for the worst and hope for the best!, which had become the unofficial motto of the St. James Parish community as residents scurried to sandbag homes and prepare for unknown amounts of backwater to flood the Parish’s east bank. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 11th, 12th and 13th, the most rainfall ever recorded (as much as 25-30 inches) fell on most of south Louisiana (from Lafayette to Gonzales) and caused some of the worst flooding this region, this state, and this country has ever seen.

Flood preparation was a family affair for both the Poché and Detillier families last week. Ethan Detillier, age 9, a student at Paulina Elementary, shadowed his dad, Devin Detillier, as he helped to sandbag the homes of family, friends and even strangers.

President Timmy Roussel terminated St. James Parish Emergency Preparedness Director Eric Deroche effective last Thursday. Roussel, in a prepared statement, said, “I, as Parish President, have to make decisions that are best for all facets of our organization and the residents of St. James Parish. The separation of Eric Deroche as my appointment to Emergency Preparedness Director is effective as of Thursday, August 18, 2016. St. James Parish appreciates his contributions and many years of service."

Parish President And ADA Remain At Odds; Feud Leads To Changes In Procedure To Pay Parish Bills

An on-going feud between Parish President Timmy Roussel and Assistant District Attorney Bruce Mohon is resulting in some procedural challenges for the St. James Parish Council. In May of 2016, Roussel cut Mohon’s salary citing trust issues and a poor working relationship, and since his salary has been decreased, Mohon has challenged the legality of some of the Council’s common practices.
