Weidert Takes The Ride Of His Life

Orlando’s Disney World is a favorite vacation destination for both individuals and families. It’s not uncommon for adults to go there to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or other milestone. Very few cycle 488 miles into the Florida resort on their 50th birthday. Chad Weidert of Gramercy is one of them. A running and cycling enthusiast, Chad has been riding his bike all over the area for a few years. Last Labor Day, during a ride back to Gramercy along Hwy. 3125, he rode his bike into the back of a big truck parked near.

Community Honors The Life Of Kathleen Burnss

A Gramercy resident who died as the result of a drunk driver was remembered at a vigil near the place where she died. Roughly 300 of Kathleen “Kat” Burns’ family and friends came to the Gem Drugstore located on LA Hwy. 3125 to remember the “caring woman and her bright smile,” her brother Frank Burns said. The site is adjacent to the location where Burns’ vehicle was struck by a drunk driver on Sunday, June 19th

Fr. McCaughey Installed Pastor Of Three Parishes

Father Matthew McCaughey was installed as pastor of Our Lady of Peace, St. James and St. Philip Catholic churches this past weekend, only a day after arriving in the area. Bishop Robert Muench of the Diocese of Baton Rouge attended one Mass in each of the three parishes to install Fr. McCaughey. The three parishes will eventually transition into a cluster.

Bayou Chevreuil Task Force Asks For School Board’s Support

The Bayou Chevreuil Task Force asked the St. James Parish School Board to support their efforts to procure funding to make significant improvements to that portion of Hwy. 20 known as the Bayou Chevreuil road. Represented by Chairman Edward Becnel and members Parish President Timmy Roussel, Councilmen Eddie Kraemer and Ken Brass, local businessman Randy Becnel and retired teacher and principal S. Jude Reulet, the group made the presentation at the School Board meeting held Tuesday, June 28th.

Perique Tobacco Finds Its Way Into Liqueur Bottle

After reading the article on Dudley LeBlanc two weeks ago, Pat Duhe of Lutcher called to say that Perique tobacco is used for more than cigars, cigarettes and pipes and she invited me over to taste Perique liqueur. Clark and Pat’s hospitality was amazing and their stories were as smooth and sometimes spicy as the liqueur they shared. Pat is related to the Brock family of Vacherie and the two of them met at Mike’s Place in Chackbay.

Lions Club Helps Beautify Towns

The Lutcher-Gramercy Lions Club started a beautification project in the Towns of Lutcher and Gramercy in June of 2016. Mayors Patrick St. Pierre and Steve Nosacka each selected a site at which he desired to plant crepe myrtle trees.

The annual St. James Parish Small Business Banquet was held at the St. James Parish Boat Club on Tuesday, and as in years past, the evening was one full of good fellowship, good entertainment and good food. Sponsored by the St. James Parish Government and Parish President Timmy Roussel, the St. James Parish Council and the St. James Parish Economic Development Board, the theme for this year’s banquet was “Red, White & Blue - St. James Parish Appreciates You”.

School Board Attorney To Assist Ascension Parish In Search For Superintendent

The St. James Parish School Board’s attorney Dannie Garrett, III was recently contacted by the Ascension Parish School Board and asked to help Ascension design a process to select a new Superintendent. Garrett is the attorney responsible for implementing the process the St. James Parish School Board recently used in selecting Ed Cancienne as the system’s new Superintendent and all Board members felt the process was streamlined, efficient, transparent and fair.

Council Delays Calling Election To Fund Clerk Of Court’s Office

The St. James Parish Council last week decided to delay calling a millage election to provide funding for the Clerk of Court. Parish President Timmy Roussel said there is time to call the election in January since the Clerk will not receive any funding until January 2018.

Woman Tragically Killed In Father’s Day Accident

Last Sunday was a tragic day in St. James Parish as an early morning vehicle crash near Gem Drugs in Gramercy resulted in the death of a woman and a young man charged with vehicular homicide. According to Lieutenant Jody Ordeneaux with the Gramercy Police Department, the lead law enforcement agency that worked the crash, that at roughly 5:17 a.m. on Sunday, a pickup truck driven by Montana Hymel (22 years of age), who was traveling west on LA 3125, collided head-on with a Toyota sedan, driven by Kathleen Burns (61 years of age), who was traveling east on LA 3125.
