Federal Judge Clears The Way For GGCA

U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman, in a ruling dated August 3, 2016, granted the authority for Greater Grace Charter Academy, Inc. (GGCA) to operate its Type 2 Charter School in St. James Parish. The school is expected to open later this month.

Sewerage Service Headed To West Bank’s Molaison Community

A new sewer connection line for the Molaison area of South Vacherie will cost $1,353,062.00. Parish President Timmy Roussel told the members of the St. James Parish Council at their meeting last week that “the Molaison Community Sewer System will serve about 50 residential properties on Apple Street, Apricot Street, Guidry Lane, Melon Lane and Hwy. 20.”

2016 West St. James Dr. Martin Luther KingMemorial Scholarship Recipients Announced

On Monday, July 25, 2016, a program was held at the First Baptist Church in Vacherie to announce the recipients of the 2016 West St. James Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Scholarships. During the program, a total of five $500 scholarships were awarded to graduating seniors at St. James High School.

School Board Approves 2016-17 Student Policy Manual; Thanks Jarvis Landry For Giving Back

The St. James Parish School Board last week took action on a few matters to help ready the local school system for the start of classes. Students will report to their respective schools on August 8th. The Board approved the 61-page 2016-17 Student Policy Manual and Administrative Director Gaynell Albert said the school principals agreed with the policy following a comprehensive meeting.

Dustin Poche Proud To Wear A Police Uniform And Proud To Call St. James Parish His Home

Sgt. Dustin Poche, an 11-year veteran of the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office, carries two special things with him all the time and he’s happy to share those. The first is a St. Christopher medal, the patron saint of travelers, that he wears on a chain around his neck and under his bullet-proof vest, not only for added protection, but also because to him it represents the faith of his family.

Editor’s note: Two weeks ago, after the incident in Baton Rouge where three police officers were killed in the line of duty, we asked St. James Parish Sheriff Willy Martin, Jr. if we could interview some members of his department to learn the source of their inspiration and motivation for their work. We asked to talk to officers who respond to calls and work in the community. The following is what they had to say:
 
Deputy Prentiss Woodfork, Sergeant Dustin Tomlinson, Detective Monica Credidio and Deputy Pierre Henderson have more in common than being police officers. They love their work and their interaction with the community.

Community Gathers To Pray For Law Enforcement

Held adjacent to Gramercy's Main Street Police Station, a crowd which numbered 100 attended a candlelight prayer vigil Thursday that remembered officers in the police shootings of recent weeks. The vigil occurred as the sun sat last Thursday, with Gramercy Police Chief Brent Detillier expressing appreciative sentiments of local law enforcement.

Audit Shows $10 Million Profit For Parish

St. James Parish government auditor Mike LeBlanc, who represents the accounting firm of Postlethwaite and Netterville, reported to the Parish Council that St. James Parish government operated at a profit of more than $10 million in 2015. The Parish’s net worth or equity for 2015 was $138,995,701, up by $10,350,431 from the 2014 total of $128,645,720. Of the $10.35 million increase, $8,888,483 is from governmental activities such as general and special revenue funds.
