Council Tables Revising Meeting Schedule

The St. James Parish Council, at its October 5th meeting, tabled an ordinance revising their meeting schedule so that they can approve all employee payroll checks and accounts payable before they are issued. If passed, the Council would have changed its meeting schedule to every other week in order to be able to approve the checks before they are issued.

Parish Baseball Star Honored And Remembered

Last week the St. James Parish Council passed a resolution recognizing David Julius “Gentleman Dave” Malarcher for his achievements in baseball. His great-great nephew Kendall Malarcher accepted a plaque on behalf of his family and the plaque will be hung in the new District 4 Senior Center and multipurpose building when it opens in December.

Director Of Special Ed Receives Award

Mrs. Vondra Etienne-Steib, Director of Special Education for the St. James Parish School System, has received the 2016 Louisiana Behavior Analysis Association Award for Distinguished Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Advocacy presented by the Louisiana Behavior Analysis Association (LaBAA). The St. James Parish School Board received word of the honor during its meeting Tuesday, October 11th. LaBAA member Derek Shanman said Etienne-Steib has done more to promote the practice of ABA in the state than anybody he has met.

Parish Council Concedes To District Attorney’s Fund Request

The St. James Parish Council agreed last week to give the District Attorney an additional $93,000 to operate his office in St. James Parish, less than a month after approving an amended budget giving him another $15,000. Their vote on the matter ends an on-going debate between the District Attorney and St. James Parish President Timmy Roussel

Masked Duo Disturb The Peace In Local Grocery Store

On Monday, September 26, 2016, at approximately 5:45 p.m., the St. James Parish Sheriff's Office responded to a call regarding two individuals who entered Matherne's Supermarket in Paulina wearing Halloween masks. According to Major Sid Berthelot with the Sheriff’s Office, the two individuals did not act or behave aggressively and the two left the store after the manager demanded they leave.

Sisters Celebrate Anniversary At Our Lady Of Peace

Sixty-five years ago the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross first came to Vacherie from Merrill, Wisconsin to begin their “Negro Apostolate”, as it was referred to at the time. This weekend a host of the Sisters returned to Vacherie to celebrate that anniversary. The Holy Cross Sisters intended to start a mission in China. Sister Marie Theodosia Laufer was at the motherhouse in Ingenbohl, Switzerland when the matter was being discussed. She told her superiors that there was a need for mission work in the United States.
