Mosaic’s Gift To United Way Will Provide Books For Children

A partnership among Mosaic Uncle Sam, Capital Area United Way, The Dolly Parton Imagination Library and the St. James Parish School Board will promote literacy with pre-schoolers, the St. James Parish School Board learned Tuesday. Jackie McCreary, Public Affairs Manager for Mosaic Louisiana Operations explained that as part of her company’s 2016 United Way campaign, employees were able to vote for a one-time donation to the charity of their choice.

Officials Cut Ribbon To Open District 4 Multipurpose Building & Senior Center

The grand opening of the District 4 multipurpose building and senior citizen center, located across River Road from the Convent Courthouse, was dedicated Wednesday evening.
 
St. James Parish President Timmy Roussel told those in attendance that the $4 million building was fully funded by grants and “not one penny came from local taxpayer funds”. He said the combination recreation and senior center “is one of the premier buildings in St. James Parish”.

Santa Brent Enjoys Visits With Children

With many children to visit in schools, shopping malls and photography studios, Santa sometimes has to find people who look a lot like him to help out. If not, Santa would be so exhausted he would likely get sick and then he would not be able to visit boys and girls all over the world on Christmas Eve.

Bonfires And Bulldogs Collide Once Again At 27th Annual Festival

The Lutcher Bulldog football team did it again - First, they won back-toback state championships for the first time in school history, and Second, they did it right in the middle of the 27th Annual Festival of the Bonfires.
 
In recent years, the Bulldogs and Bonfire Fest have become synonymous as this was the fourth time since 2003 that the ‘Dogs have played for and won the title on Bonfire Fest weekend.

Police Make Additional Arrests In Connection With Harry Town Shooting

On October 27, 2016, at approximately 12:39 a.m., the St. James Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a subject who had been shot and was not breathing. According to police, the shooting took place in the driveway of a vacant residence located at 19417 Harry Town Lane in Vacherie, LA.

Asst. Financial Director Pleads Not Guilty To Two Counts Of Malfeasance In Office

St. James Parish Assistant Financial Director Ashley Poché, who was indicted by a St. James Parish Grand Jury in September on two counts of Malfeasance in Office, appeared at the Convent Courthouse and pleaded not guilty to both counts.

Following a joint investigation conducted by 23rd Judicial District Attorney Ricky Babin’s office and Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry’s office, on September 28, 2016, Poché, along with St. James Parish President Timmy Roussel and St. James Director of Operations Blaise Gravois, were indicted by a St. James Parish Grand Jury on Malfeasance in Office charges.

St. James Voters To Go To The Polls On December 10th

On Saturday, December 10, 2016, St. James Parish registered voters will go to the polls and vote to elect a new Senator and vote For or Against three millage renewals.

As a result of the November 8, 2016 election, there is a run-off election between U.S. Senate candidates Foster Campbell, a Democrat, and John Kennedy, a registered Republican.

Sweet Citrus Grows Between Tobacco And Cane

Some St. James Parish farmers look out their back window to see acres and acres of sugar-cane. Others see the rich, green Perique tobacco leaves which are aged and fermented. When Butch Millet goes out to his farm in the morning he sees sugarcane to his left, tobacco to his right and his crop of over 500 citrus trees lining his back yard as far back towards Hwy. 3125 as he can see from his River Road home in Paulina.

Robert A. “Butch” Millet wasn’t always a citrus farmer and the land wasn’t always filled with citrus trees. His grandpa was a Perique tobacco farmer and Tobacco Barn #16 was on the property until Hurricane Betsy demolished the building.
