Parish President Reports St. James Parish Residents Leader In Insurance Coverage

St. James Parish is among Louisiana parishes with the highest percentage of its people with insurance coverage, Parish President Timmy Roussel said. Roussel, speaking during the President’s Report at last Wednesday’s St. James Parish Council meeting, said that the parish ranks No. 9 in Louisiana and is above the national average for auto, health and life insurance coverage.

Lutcher Aldermen Adopt Budget In Knick Of Time

The Lutcher Aldermen needed two special meetings in less than a week to finally pass an operating budget that begins May 1, 2016 and ends April 30, 2017. The first special  meeting, which was held last Thursday, April 21st, ended in a stalemate and without an operating budget being  passed, and if Tuesday’s special meeting would have resulted in the same, things could have been disastrous.

School Board Member Tyler Jasmin Officially Resigns

St. James Parish School Board member Tyler Jasmin, 27, made it official and resigned, according to a statement released at the Board's Tuesday meeting. Jasmin, who represented  the Sixth District, plead guilty, April 11th, and initially faced four counts of obtaining controlled and dangerous substances by fraud, altering a prescription and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.

In the April 7, 2016, edition of the News Examiner-Enterprise, the article entitled “School Board And Superintendent Agree To Contract Buyout; Hire Interim Consultant”, there were a few segments of the article that are due some clarification. B efore the article went to press, there were several attempts to contact the School Board’s attorney, but for several reasons, a phone interview never materialized.

LHSAA To Call Special Meeting To Vote On New Plan

In the never-ending saga that is the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s (LHSAA) select/non-select situation, there may be a path to a possible end of a split in all the state’s prep sports. The Executive Committee of the LHSAA is expected to call for a special session of the state’s principals to consider a plan presented by the LHSAA’s School Relations Committee (SRC).

Senator Says Plans To Repair/Reopen I-10 On-ramp Are In The Works

Senator Eddie Lambert says he would like the public to know that the on-ramp to Interstate 10 between Gramercy and Sorrento will eventually reopen. According to an email to Senator Lambert from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LDOTD), prospective contractors will be able to bid on the project beginning August 10, 2016 and the LDOTD is in an accelerated schedule in preparing the plans, which are roughly 60 percent complete at this time.

When Rodie Martin paced the track at the Lutcher Park Saturday she, like so many other St. James Parish residents, displayed the courage, bravery and attitudes of resiliency shown by those who are cancer survivors. St. James Parish has had an annual Relay for Life event for at least 20 years and the day-long activity is the culmination of an entire year of fundraising activities which participants hope will eventually eradicate the disease in our lifetime.

For many, many years and many generations, people in the Vacherie community have used music as a means of enjoyment and fun. “Back in the day”, there were many African-American musicians and bands in South Vacherie and many stories have been told about them over the years and many people today still remember the fun they had dancing or singing along to their music and enjoying the entertainment they provided.
