St. James NAACP Honors Locals Who Played Part In Black History

The St. James Parish NAACP on Saturday evening honored seven adults who played significant roles in local black history. The 2016 honorees included John B. Schexnaydre (posthumously), Mamie Davis, Albertine Louis Miller, Adam K. Lemieux, Paula M. Saul Kelly, Floyd A. Marshall, Sr. and Lionel Washington.

School Board Reshapes Plan To Move Sixth Graders To Central Office; Addition To Lutcher High Now New Home

The St. James Parish School Board reversed itself from a January decision and will not move East Bank sixth graders into its Lutcher office facilities, but instead, the students will be placed in an area to be constructed in the current Lutcher High School. School System architect Perry Segura told the Board that he found sufficient space to house the students.

Valdez Hired As New St. James Head Football Coach And Athletic Director

St. James Parish Schools Superintendent Dr. Alonzo Luce announced Monday night that Robert Valdez has been hired as the new St. James High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. Valdez, who has lived in Gramercy for several years and whose wife is a teacher at Lutcher Elementary, is no stranger to River Parish football and is no stranger to the St. James football program.

Clean-up And Relief Efforts In Full Force A Week After Tornado

For many St. James Parish residents, last Tuesday afternoon was a living nightmare. Although it seems like an eternity, it was just nine days ago that a powerful, EF-3 rated tornado with maximum winds of 140 mph touched down in Convent, and mainly in and through the Sugar Hill RV Park and surrounding streets.

chool Board Chooses Option 2 Concerning Superintendent’s Contract, But No Details Released

The speculation on whether St. James Parish School Superintendent Lonnie Luce will stay or go may be coming to an end. On Wednesday, the St. James Parish School Board, after emerging from Executive Session, voted to accept Option 2, which is one of three recommendations dealing with Luce’s contract, which expires in December of this year.

Blue Cross Partners With Sheriff’s Office To Offer Safe Disposal Of Prescription Painkillers

As evidence continues to mount about the skyrocketing rate of painkiller abuse, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana and law enforcement partners have come together to help Louisiana residents dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs. Locally, Blue Cross has worked with the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators and the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office to install secure drop boxes in two locations in the parish.
