Veteran's Day Event Moved to Lutcher Park; Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Earl Deroche To Headline Celebration

On Wednesday morning, St. James Parish officials charged with planning the annual St. James Parish Veteran’s Day Celebration met and have decided to move the event to the Lutcher Park. Weather forecasters are predicting severe weather to impact the Parish on Saturday, and with the Gramercy Park currently saturated due to earlier rains, officials fear the grounds will be unsuitable to hold the event.

Parish Takes Over Gramercy Fire Department

The Town of Gramercy and the St. James Parish government joined forces and took over Gramercy’s fire department. Wednesday saw the two political entities work in tandem as Gramercy’s Aldermen, first, passed a resolution authorizing the Parish to begin proceedings to dissolve the Gramercy Fire Department. The Parish, then, approved resolutions to go to court to acquire an injunction, which prohibited access to the fire department’s bank accounts, replaced the locks on the doors, started an accounting of the property contained at the two fire stations and merged the fire department with the new St. James Fire Department.

Happy 100th Birthday To East Bank Knights Of Columbus

The east bank Knights of Columbus Council, serving the parishes of Sacred Heart in Gramercy, St. Joseph in Paulina and St. Michael in Convent, is celebrating its 100th anniversary in November. Formed and incorporated on November 20, 1915, the fraternal group of men will have a celebration on Saturday, November 7th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with their wives and the widows of deceased past Grand Knights, former heads of their organization.

Pumpkin Patch Classic 5K Race Rescheduled

The unusually long-lasting and heavy rain that St. James Parish received last Sunday caused several scheduled events in the parish to be canceled or rescheduled. Unfortunately, the Poché Plantation Arts & Crafts Festival had to cancel its Fest on Sunday and the Lutcher/Gramercy Lions Club’s 5K Run/Walk over the Veterans Memorial bridge had to do the same.

The River Region Chamber of Commerce hosted a political forum last week and all of the candidates who qualified to run for St. James Parish President appeared. The candidates Pete Dufresne, Eileen Jasmin, Garret J. Melancon, Sr., and Timmy Roussel answered the same questions from a moderator.

After an 11 year, lets call it a break, one of the biggest and best Louisiana high school football rivalries is back! This Friday, October 16th at 7:00 p.m., the St. James Wildcats and the Lutcher Bulldogs will once again meet on the playing field, something that has not happened since 2004.

Council Discusses Age Requirements To Rent Parish Facilities

The St. James Parish Council discussed implementing a new age requirement for the rental of its recreational resources. During last Wednesday’s Council meeting held at the Convent Courthouse, District 1 Council member Alvin “Shark” St. Pierre said that he has been asked to seek an age increase for rental of the buildings and parks.
