School Board Finance Committee Hears Annual Audit Report

On Monday, January 22nd, Gerald Thibodeaux of the Lafayette accounting firm of Kolder, Champagne, Slaven & Company, LLC presented an independent auditor’s report of the St. James Parish School System to the members of the School Board’s Finance Committee.

According to Thibodeaux, the Board’s total liabilities exceeded total assets by $44,384,886; and the unrestricted portion of the net deficit at $(84,547,200).

Council And DHR Continue To Look For Ways To Improve And Meet Housing Needs

Of the twenty-one items on the St. James Parish Council meeting agenda last week, more than half pertained to various Department of Human Resources (DHR) programs.

One resolution acknowledges that the 2017 Community Needs Assessment done in the Parish by DHR ranked housing as the top concern or need of residents, specifically the need for affordable housing and home repairs.

Ash Street Dispute Now In Court

After a two-day delay due to court closure because of freezing weather, 23rd Judicial District Judge Jason Verdigets, last Friday, presided over the first day of a court case to ultimately determine whether the parish can repair potholes and hard-surface a limestone extension to Ash Street in Vacherie

Krewe Of M.A.C. Announces 2018 Mardi Gras Royal Court

The Krewe of M.A.C. (Making A Change) was founded in November 2016 by a group of St. James Parish residents to promote good fellowship, to contribute to civic good, to encourage charity, and to keep alive the great spirit of Mardi Gras in St. James Parish and the River Parish Region.

 

The Krewe of M.A.C.’s mission is to uplift the community through various endeavors of engagement in an effort to “Make a Difference” in the lives of the local youth. Also, the Krewe of M.A.C. will support the enhancement of programs and advocacy activity that promote positive thoughts and actions amongst youth in the River Parish area.

School Board Hears Report On District’s Dual Enrollment Program

The St. James Parish School Board heard a presentation by Administrative Director of Teaching and Learning Anne Detillier regarding the dual enrollment program, which allows qualifying high school students to obtain college credit while still attending high school.

 

As the Board continues to try to find ways to cut costs and save money, the system’s dual enrollment program was reviewed to see what, if any, changes could possibly be implemented to save the system money

Martin Luther Kin's Life Celebrated Throughout St. James Parish

“What will they say for your eulogy?” Dr. Angela White-Bazile asked that question to the many who attended the Martin Luther King program Monday at St. James High School.

After reading from the end of Dr. King’s “Drum Major Instinct” speech, White-Bazile, the first African-American Executive Counsel to the Louisiana Supreme Court under the first African- American Chief Justice Bernette Joshua Johnson, asked that question.

New Cypress Grove Montessori Academy To Offer Children Vastly Different Learning Environment

An all new option for early childhood education this Fall in St. James Parish is Cypress Grove Montessori Academy and all children living in St. James Parish between the ages of four and nine can apply to attend.

Named after Italian physician, single mother and educator Maria Montessori (1870-1952), the educational method is quite different from that which is used in the traditional classroom.

Ryan Louque Named Parish Council Chairman

District 3 St. James Parish Councilman Ryan Louque was elected Chairman of the St. James Parish Council during their regular meeting Wednesday in Convent.

District 1 Council Alvin “Shark” St. Pierre, Jr. vacated the chair because his two-year term was up; and immediately thereafter, St. Pierre nominated Louque.

Auditor Presents Favorable Financial Report To Gramercy Board

Town of Gramercy financial auditor Mike LeBlanc attended Monday’s Gramercy Town meeting to present his annual financial report to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen.

As LeBlanc has done for the last several years, he told the Board the Town is in very good financial shape.

LeBlanc, who represents Postlethwaite & Netterville, said his office did not have to report any major findings concerning the Town’s financial state, which is always a good thing.

Three Qualify To Officially Replace Brass As District 6 Parish Councilman

When qualifying to become a candidate for the upcoming District 6 St. James Parish Council race officially closed last Friday, three candidates had put their names on the ballot.

A Primary Election will be held in March to permanently replace former District 6 Councilman Ken Brass, who was recently sworn in to represent District 58 in the Louisiana House of Representatives.

The special General Election to fill the unexpired seat will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018, and early voting will be held March 10th-17th (except for Sunday, March 11th) from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
