Port Purchases Land In Vacherie

Last week, the Port of South Louisiana swooped in and purchased roughly 1,684 acres of land and river batture for $9.9 million on the west bank of St. James Parish near the St. James/St. John Parish line.

For the past few weeks, drivers in the Vacherie area probably have read the signs placed throughout the area advertising a land auction set to be held on June 1st in Gonzales, LA.

Council Quashes St. Pierre’s Attempt To Investigate Issues Related To Indictments

The St. James Parish Council last week quashed the efforts of Chairman Alvin “Shark” St. Pierre, Jr., to hire special counsel to investigate matters that contributed to the indictments of Parish President Timmy Roussel and Director of Operations Blaise Gravois.

Treats Come In Many Colors

Paula Brignac Roussel and her brother Andy have quite a colorful business. Really! Red, blue, green, purple, pink, orange and every other color of the rainbow. And rainbows, too! Just as happy as the colors are the smiles on the faces of their customers as they walk away with their favorite sweet treats.

Paula and Andy spent their teen years in a snowball stand. Their parents owned the Gramercy Snowball Stand that, at the time, was housed in a blue building at the corner of North Montz and Main Streets in Gramercy.

Girl Scout Troop 20319 Completes Community Tours

St. James Parish Girl Scout Troop 20319 recently completed tours of the Lutcher Branch of the St. James Parish Library and the Lutcher Branch of Regions Bank. At the Library, the girls completed activities to earn their Computer Expert Badge as well as took a fantastic tour of the library

Vacherie Home And Auto Reaches Sixty-Year MilestoneA

Although it hardly seems possible now, the tiny parcel of land at the corner of Hwys. 20 and 643 in South Vacherie was the first location of a popular business. Known by the locals as Tri-Corner, the triangular tract of property was carved from the creation of highways.

The vacant lot is much smaller now due to the widening of the highways and has been sold

American Legion Post 565 Invites All Eligible To Join Organization

The Adams-Roussell Post 565 of the American Legion, which was chartered February 7, 1951, invites area veterans to join their service organization.

Post 565 had been a post for African-American men for quite a long time and the previously allwhite post was dissolved years before and the membership became part of a Baton Rouge post.

The St. James Parish School Board honored parish Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) instructor Brad Smith at the Tuesday, May 9th, meeting in Lutcher.

JAG is a federally funded drop-out prevention and recovery program which stresses academics and skills as well as leadership development. Students are also taught the importance of civic responsibility and social awareness to become responsible citizens and productive workers.

Judge Denies Roussel’s Motion To Recuse All Judges Of The 23rd Judicial District

Judge Michael Kirby, the AD HOC Judge appointed to hear St. James Parish President Timmy Roussel’s motion to recuse all the Judges of the 23rd Judicial District from presiding over his upcoming Malfeasance in Office trial, ruled in the State’s favor and dismissed the motion to recuse.

On September 28, 2016, Roussel was indicted on six counts of Malfeasance in Office following a joint investigation conducted by 23rd Judicial District Attorney Ricky Babin’s office and Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry’s office.

The indictments alleged Roussel directed/authorized parish employees, equipment, materials and funds to benefit private companies and private landowners by, among other things, allegedly tearing down a private shed, a private playhouse, a mobile home, and installing a gas line for Millennium Galvanizing free of charge.

Children’s Hospital Helicopter Team Makes A Stop In Lutcher

Children’s Hospital’s newly formed Dedicated Helicopter Transport Team made a quick stop at the St. James Parish Hospital on Monday to let the hospital’s staff know what the new team is all about and what services they offer.

Gretchen Dondis, Director of Outreach for Children’s, said Children’s is very proud of the new dedicated transport team, which is now available 24 hours a day and at the drop of a hat.
