LeBlanc Sworn In As Clerk of Court

Shane LeBlanc, pictured with his right hand raised, was officially swornin on June 30th by 23rd Judicial District Judge Tommy Kliebert as St. James Parish Clerk of Court.

Joined by his fiancee Michelle Veron Martin, LeBlanc fills the vacancy left when long-time Clerk of Court Edmond Kinler opted to retired on June 30th.

School Board To Hire Firm To Drastically Restructure Maintenance And Custodial Work

Volkert, a consulting firm located in Mobile, AL, may be hired by the St. James School Board to aid the Board in restructuring how the school system maintains and cleans its school buildings and facilities.

During a special meeting held last Wednesday, Volkert representatives made a presentation and outlined what the company would do to get the school district back on track concerning maintenance and custodial services.

School Board Addresses Many Issues

After voting unanimously to put the matter on their meeting agenda, the St. James Parish School Board agreed to extend their heating, ventilation and air conditioning contract for three months. Siemen’s has maintained the school system’s HVAC equipment since 2014.

Siemen’s representative Thomas Adams said the company also added the board’s water treatment facilities and filters to the original contract. Board finance manager Jim Mitchell said the cost of continuing the contract is $41,782 per month. The contract will be renegotiated in three months to add all new HVAC equipment.

Remembering My Friend Marian Jasmin

Have you ever had a song or experience that you couldn’t get off your mind? I have. Many days have passed, but I’m unable to forget about my friend’s death. Because I am blind, I spend a lot of time on the phone or watching television. I think I spend over half of my awake hours on the phone daily.

When I learned that my friend, Marian Victor Jasmin, had died, I responded with the usual, “Oh No!” “When?” Later, her daughter called me. Because my name was in the caller list so many times, she called me personally to give me the news.

Judge Hears Several Motions In Roussel Case

On Monday, June 19th, lawyers representing St. James Parish President Timmy Roussel and lawyers from the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office were at the Convent Courthouse to hear pre-trial motions filed in the indictment case against Roussel.

Twenty-third Judicial District Judge Jason Verdigets ruled on one motion and took all others under advisement. The Attorney General’s office is prosecuting Roussel, who was indicted by a Grand Jury last September on six counts of Malfeasance in Office for allegedly running a free gas line to a private business and using public equipment, employees and funds to benefit private businesses and private residents.

Railroad Company Installs Culvert To Aid In Draining Belle Rue Subdivision

It has taken several years, but drainage improvements in the Belle Rue Subdivision in Lutcher is on the way as a new 48-inch pipe was installed by the Canadian National (CN) Railway company earlier this week. On Monday afternoon, the 63.5 foot, 48 inch, 3/4 inch thick solid steel pipe that weighed 24,053.8 pounds was carefully threaded under the railroad tracks by CN workers.

Small Business Honored

“Yes, we have a lot of big industry here in St. James Parish, but it is you - the small businesses of this parish - that are the backbone of our community and our economy,” St. James Parish President Timmy Roussel told the audience at the annual St. James Parish Small Business Appreciation Banquet held Tuesday evening at the St. James Parish Boat Club.

The yearly banquet is geared to honor and recognize small business, to provide a platform to promote networking, and to educate the Parish’s small business owners of programs and resources offered by the Parish and the State that help small businesses expand, prosper and even get off the ground.

Gramercy Mayor Briefs Aldermen On Noranda Air Permit Modification

Gramercy officials discussed how a local industrial company asking a state agency to renew its air operating permit will affect the Town and its residents. The request also includes a modification to increase its dust and mercurial emissions.

Noranda Alumina requested a Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality Part 70 Air Operating Permit Renewal/ Modification for the potential emissions of mercury to the atmosphere.

Garden Club Honors Ruth Gaudin

The Riverside Garden Club recently honored long-time member Ruth Gaudin of Lutcher for her leadership abilities and knowledge of artistic and horticultural design. A member of the club since its inception, Ruth served as president from 1970 to 1972.

Member Nancy Cashio, who served as president from 1994-97, said Ruth “is a shining example of education for us. She was honored for being a dedicated member of our club.
