Many people believe in angels. They know that angels live among us and are easily identifiable through the eyes of faith.

They don’t always wear long, flowing white dresses with golden haloes. Angels could be our neighbors, friends, and people who live in the community.

Although she will likely be too shy to admit it, Karen Roddy of Lutcher and her husband Bucky are angels and they have a band of angels who help them in many ways, including a very special endeavor.

At the peak of the hurricane season, members of the St. James Parish Council were concerned last week about drainage in various locations throughout the parish.

Director of Operations Blaise Gravois said property owners were going to his office to sign papers allowing the department to cut grass and dig ditches to properly drain their land. The Parish must now have permission from all landowners in order for Parish workers to do any improvements to their property.

St. James Wildcat head football coach Robert Valdez says he could not be prouder of his team following last Friday’s 13-7 victory over the in-parish rival Lutcher Bulldogs.

“This game is so big for our community,” said Valdez.

“To be able to beat them is real big. I am very excited, not only for my football team, but for my community and for anyone who has ever put on a St. James uniform. Friday was a very, very happy post-game atmosphere.

My uncle John Reulet, 94, died a few days ago. He was born and lived the first part of his life in Vacherie, until he went into the Navy in 1943. His passing brought back fond memories.

Though he lived in Baton Rouge since his discharge from the service in 1945, he often came back to Vacherie to spend time at his camp at Lake Des Allemands, to visit with his siblings.

The Lutcher Aldermen, during their regular meeting held on Tuesday evening, passed a resolution that will allow the Mayor and Aldermen, if they choose to, to call an election to ask Lutcher voters to approve a one cent sales tax increase.

The resolution that was unanimously adopted (Alderman Tommy George absent) is the first step. The second step will be actually calling the election during a special meeting scheduled for October 17, 2017. Mayor Patrick St. Pierre said he has been speaking with the Aldermen and members of the public and that repairing streets and improving drainage throughout the Town is a top priority for all.

We’ve likely all heard the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Wade and Lisa Faucheux can attest to the truth of the adage. Twenty years ago, this September 16th, the Faucheux family welcomed Paige. A month later, she was diagnosed with Down syndrome.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that one in every 700 babies born in our country per year, about 600 babies, are born with the extra chromosome which causes Down. By November, Paige had grown from her 2-pound birth weight to five pounds and her parents took her home. Within the first year, she was receiving physical therapy and other special services at home.

On April 2, 2017, Mr. Cal Smith reached the age of 104, a decade +4. Smith was born on April 6, 1913 to the union of Cornelius and Virginia Smith. He had 5 siblings, all deceased. He is known as the “Can Man” in Brookstown and Welcome as for years he recycled can from the sides of the road and levee. Smith’s birthday was celebrated at Brookstown Hall with a family and friends. He was present with a proclamation by former.

“Large enough to serve, small enough to care” is the brand logo for our own St. James Parish Hospital in Lutcher.

The largeness of the hospital can be realized any day of the week when there is a hustle and bustle of activity throughout the facility as patrons go seeking the services of health professionals.

The smallness of the hospital is apparent in the way the staff greets and cares for the public. Staff members care for people in the hospital and have helped to save lives in the community and elsewhere.

The St. James Parish Council Wednesday night voted along racial lines to ratify the decision of the St. James Parish Planning Commission to approve the Bayou Bridge Pipeline.

District 5 Councilman Clyde Cooper, who represents the residents in the area where the pipeline will eventually terminate, earlier asked fellow councilmen to hear the appeal of the Planning Commission’s decision.

The board meeting room at the Vacherie Courthouse Annex was standing room only and many of those who voiced opposition to the earlier decision were from the 5th District, while others were members of environmental and social justice organizations from New Orleans and other areas.

The St. James Parish Council took the time during its regularly scheduled meeting last Wednesday in Vacherie to honor Chief Petty Officer Preston St. Pierre for his accomplishments in the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corp.
