Cassandra Bailey Says Support System Was Key To Surviving Six Year Fight With Breast Cancer

Cassandra Bailey and her sister scheduled annual mammograms out of caution because their father’s sisters all had breast cancer.

In March 2011, the then 50-year old mother of two adult sons felt a lump in her breast. With her annual mammogram scheduled for July, she decided to wait to have it checked. She went to the gynecologist for her annual exam and the doctor encouraged her to have the mammogram done.

Vacherie Man Wins $2 Million Lottery

According to the Louisiana Lottery’s website, Vacherie resident Jhirmar Washington became Louisiana’s newest millionaire after winning $2 million during October 7th’s Powerball drawing.

Though he is a frequent Louisiana Lottery Powerball player, Washington said he almost skipped buying a ticket for Saturday’s drawing until fate stepped in when his cousin said she was hungry. “We went to Taylor’s (Express) to get her something to eat and left with pizza and a Powerball ticket.”

Public Hearings Set To Discuss Proposed Changes To Land Use Plan

Public hearings will be held in November to hear comments on an ordinance amending the Parish Land Use Ordinance and the Code of Ordinances related to permits and compliance with the Land Use Plan.

The St. James Parish Council, at their meeting Wednesday in Convent, set the hearings for Wednesday, November 1st in Convent and Wednesday, November 15th in Vacherie. Both hearings will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Election This Saturday

If you haven’t done so through early voting, this Saturday, October 14th, you will be asked to go to the polls and cast your vote.

On Saturday, registered voters in St. James Parish will vote to elect a new St. James Parish Clerk of Court; a new Louisiana State Representative, District 58; a new Louisiana State Treasurer; and three Louisiana Constitutional Amendments.

School Board Rejects Swimming Pool And Other Bids

The St. James Parish School Board this week rejected bids on proposed renovations to Lutcher Elementary School, a new aquatic center and baseball field projects at both Parish high schools.

Meeting on Tuesday, October 10th in Lutcher, the Board learned that bids submitted on all four projects were significantly over budget. All bids 10 percent or more over budget must be rejected and readvertised.

Not long after Sandia Brown-Davis learned that her fourth child was on the way, the doctors suggested she terminate the pregnancy because they knew she was at risk.

However, because her faith taught her to trust God in all things, she chose to disregard the doctor’s advice.

Mrs. Marse you have breast cancer. Wow! For the first time in my life, the word ‘cancer’ and my name were being spoken in the same sentence. I wanted no part of the ‘breast cancer club’. I had just been unwillingly thrown onto a roller coaster and I wanted off. I felt as though I had been punched in the stomach and the air had been sucked out of me. All the terms and options for treatment being hurled at me seemed surreal.

Early Voting For The October 14, 2017 Election

Registrar of Voters, Lisa G. Medine, announces early voting for the October 14th Primary Election. On the ballot will be State Treasurer, State Representative District 58, Clerk of Court and Constitutional Amendments.

Early Voting will be held on the Third Floor of the Convent Courthouse and the Vacherie Courthouse Annex, located at 2631 LA 20 West beginning September 30th thru October 7th. Office hours for early voting are 8:30 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. Please remember to bring your picture ID which is required to vote.
