Clerk Of Court Announces Retirement; Parish Council Calls Special Election

After serving as the St. James Parish Clerk of Court for the past 45 years, Edmond E. Kinler, Jr. has announced his retirement effective June 30, 2017.

The St. James Parish Council, meeting in a special five-minute session on Monday, June 12th, passed a resolution calling for a special primary election throughout the parish on Saturday, October 14th, and a special general election on November 18th, to elect a new Clerk of Court.

St. James Retired Teachers Association

The St. James Parish Retired Teachers Association will meet on Thursday, June 15th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Public Relations Building in Lutcher. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m.

New retirees are invited to attend but will be recognized at the September meeting. Lunch plates will be sold.

Alleged Street Name Change Upsets Resident

What started as an innocent mistake ended with one Lutcher resident feeling disrespected.

Lutcher resident Vernon Lee addressed the Board of Aldermen in Lutcher on Tuesday and expressed his frustrations toward Alderwoman Darlene Riley for allegedly trying to change the name of King Avenue to Dr. Martin Luther King Drive without talking to the residents who live on and around King Avenue.

LHSAA Concludes Summer Meetings; Votes To Extend Executive Director’s Contract One-Year

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) Executive committee held their annual summer meetings and the main topic up for discussion was awarding of several LHSAA Championship sites for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years.

Cities from around the state last week put in bids for multiple events, and after all bids were presented in Executive Session, it looks like the LHSAA is moving toward awarding the championships along northern/central parts of Louisiana.

Parish Council Unsuccessful In Replacing Council Chairman

Members of the St. James Parish Council were unsuccessful in their attempt at the May 31st meeting to unseat Council Chairman Alvin “Shark” St. Pierre, Jr.

Councilmen Jason Amato and Ken Brass first surfaced discussion on replacing St. Pierre after he testified at a court hearing for Department of Operations Director Blaise Gravois, who had been indicted.

Boss Of The Boucon

La Bon Boucon, LLC is a new specialty meat market in South Vacherie.

Located across Hwy. 643 from the only grocery store in town, the establishment offers sausages that were unimaginable to the German, French and Africans who first settled the area.

The boss of the boucon, or good smoke, is Lester “Shine” Folse, Jr., who is pursuing his dream to own a smoke house. Most of the sausage creations available for sale there are his.

Board Recognizes High Achievers

Four St. James Parish students were winners at the State Literary Rally and the St. James Parish School Board recognized them at the meeting held Monday, May 22nd, at the School Board office in Lutcher.

Jean Paul Phillips, a student of St. James High and the Science and Math Academy (SMA)won first place in business.  Lutcher High and SMA student Destenae Mosby won first place in psychology. Second place winners were Shelby Breaud, SJH/SMA, in sociology and Sarah Bradford, LHS/SMA, in calculus.

Ed Price Elected To Senate

Voters in St. James Parish spoke loud and clear last Saturday that they want Ed Price (Democrat, Gonzales) to be their next Senator.

Price, who is currently a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, was running to fill the unexpired District 2 Senatorial seat formally held by fellow Democrat Troy Brown.

Roussel Responds To Fifth District Concerns

St. James Parish President Timmy Roussel recently responded to concerns submitted to the St. James Parish Council on April 19, 2017.

Rev. Harry Joseph, Jr. submitted a petition that he said was signed by 600 residents which listed three concerns of the people of District 5.
