Alive at 105! - Parish’s Oldest Resident Cal Smith Turns 105

On April 2, 2018, Cal Smith reached the age of 105, a century plus five years.

Smith was born on April 6, 1913, the son of Cornelius and Virginia Smith. He had five siblings, all now deceased and he is known as the “Can Man” in Brookstown and Welcome because, for years, he recycled cans from the sides of the road and levee.

Smith was born and reared in Welcome. He currently resides in Brookstown, where he is cared for by devoted nephew, Cornelius James, cousin, Rev. Herbert Harris, and godchild, Leona Harris.
